FUNDING EQUIPMENT ON ALMOST NO BUDGET

Where the money actually comes from when your program cannot afford what it needs.

Funding a program with no money is hard.

If your athletic budget gets split across every sport and your share is a few hundred dollars, you already know the problem. Timing equipment runs $500 to $2,000. Everything else competes for the same money.

Here is what actually works at that scale.

LOOK LOCAL FIRST

A national foundation is comparing you against hundreds of applicants. A local service club is deciding whether to help kids in the town where its members live. That is a completely different conversation.

You are also competing with fewer people than you think, because most coaches never ask.

SERVICE CLUBS

Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Elks. Most towns have at least one, and they are the most overlooked source of money in youth sports.

The part most coaches do not know: these clubs meet weekly, and they need speakers. Filling twenty minutes is an ongoing problem for whoever runs their program committee. A coach with a real story is useful to them. Most clubs also have a community grant budget, and it is not always advertised, so ask.

Search your town plus the club name, find the contact email, and offer to speak. Bring the equipment your athletes are using, or photos of it, then make a specific ask with a number attached.

We reached out to multiple community service clubs and were generously funded over $1,000 to help us donate timing gates to programs that can't afford them.

LOCAL BUSINESSES

Businesses sponsor youth sports constantly.

Start with businesses already connected to your program. Parents who own something, places your team already spends money, the PT office that treats your athletes. A cold ask to a chain is a wasted afternoon. Also, many businesses will run fundraisers with you. You have people go eat there at a certain time, and you get a percentage of sales from that time period.

NONPROFITS THAT GIVE EQUIPMENT

Some organizations exist specifically to get equipment to programs that cannot buy it. The applications are usually short, and the people reading them already believe underfunded programs exist.

Search your sport plus terms like equipment donation or grant for schools. Ask other coaches in your league what they have used.

FAMILIES

This is where most programs start, and it works, but be careful. Families in a program that cannot afford equipment often cannot afford to give much either. A parent who feels obligated to give money they do not have is a real cost.

Fundraisers run by the athletes tend to work better than asking parents directly. Nobody gets put on the spot.

WHAT MAKES A REQUEST EASY TO SAY YES TO

A specific number, not a range. What exactly it buys, because people give to things rather than budgets. How many athletes benefit. And your paperwork ready before anyone asks for it.

IF IT IS TIMING EQUIPMENT YOU NEED

We build sprint timing gates and give them to programs that cannot afford them. No cost, including shipping. You can apply here.

Most of what a program needs is not something we make. But the local money is there, and the clubs meet every week whether you show up or not.
