WHY THIS MATTERS

Hand timing with a stopwatch carries roughly a quarter-second of human error — which is why track and field applies a fixed conversion when comparing hand times to fully automatic times. For a sprinter, a quarter of a second is the difference between a personal best and a plateau, and it is far larger than the improvements a season of training actually produces. Without accurate timing, an athlete cannot tell whether they are getting faster.

Commercial timing systems solve this, but they start around $375 and run past $3,000. For a well-funded program that is a line item. For a public high school, a middle school, or a youth club, it is out of reach entirely. Those athletes are not training with worse data — they are training with no data at all.

WHERE YOUR DONATION GOES

EqualSplit designs and hand-builds LiDAR sprint timing gates and provides them free of charge to programs that cannot afford commercial systems. We are run entirely by high school students. Nobody draws a salary.

Donations pay for the physical components of donated units — sensors, microcontrollers, custom circuit boards, enclosures, batteries — and the cost of shipping them to the programs that receive them. Because we build in-house and no one is paid, the overwhelming majority of every donation becomes hardware in an athlete's hands.

Sales of our timing gates also fund donated units: the margin on every set sold goes directly into this program. Donations let us reach programs faster than sales alone allow.
